With Obamacare, we’re all in this together, or are we?

20 Nov 2013

Or do we have the heart of Crony Capitalism and Crony Politics?  The following are so obviously wrong they need little comment; you Bereans will know the wrong as you review.

First up, we have Congress packing the bill with all sorts of negatives for us, then Mr. Obama invents a law to allow Congressional staff pay to be raised to fund their increased premiums, when these staffers are ineligible for subsidies because they make too much money.  But this is old news.  But fresh off the headlines is that Congress doesn’t have to go through the arduous healthcare.gov to get their new plans; their constituents only have the same benefits if they:

have access to “in-person support sessions” like the ones being conducted at the Capitol and congressional office buildings by the local exchange and four major insurers. Or can log on to a special Blue Cross and Blue Shield website for members of Congress and use a special toll-free telephone number — a “dedicated congressional health insurance plan assistance line.”  And then there is the fact that lawmakers have a larger menu of “gold plan” insurance choices than most of their constituents have back home.

Is this how you spell hypocrisy?  Or is this the way you spell it?  Unions, big supporters of the Affordable Care Act, have been lobbying vociferously to be excluded from Obamacare’s $63/month tax that every other employer plan is required to pay to help fund Obamacare.

The Obama administration indicated … it will propose exempting certain self-insured, self-administered insurance plans from two of the healthcare law’s three-year reinsurance fees.  The policies that would escape the fees include the multi-employer or “Taft Hartley” plans that are commonly held by union members.  The disclosure, buried in rules released by the Health and Human Services (HHS) Department, would give unions some of the relief they have sought from ObamaCare.

And this is after, of course, we had a government shut down over the issue that Mr. Obama would not allow the same relief to individuals (delay implementation) that he had unilaterally (and likely illegally) granted to businesses.

Perhaps the most wicked cronyism is found in this:  some exchange plans don’t cover things like hearing aids, but will cover abortion!  The Obama administration takes care of its own.

Multiple individual plans available on the D.C. health-insurance exchange specifically cover elective abortion but not hearing aids, routine foot-care, and routine eye-care. One such plan, Healthy Blue PPO $1500, has a summary on the D.C. exchange’s website titled “Excluded Services & Other Covered Services.” It says enrollees can receive coverage for abortions performed for non-medical reasons, but not for a number of other services that could seem medically necessary.

Where oh where is the equality that is always promised?  To this Berean, it seems like the implementation is just pure cronyism (with a little wickedness thrown in for good measure).
