Celebrating Black History Month With Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell

13 Feb 2021

Earlier this month in Cedarville University’s Chapel, Kevin Jones challenged CU students and faculty to take some time this month to read or watch a movie about a prominent African-American in their academic discipline to understand their contributions to the broader field. That challenge was a delight to me, and I quickly shared a video of my former professor, the late great Walter Williams, during my macroeconomics class. Free to Choose media has nicely done videos on both Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell that are about an hour each. I’ve subsequently watched the one on Thomas Sowell, and it’s very good as well. Walter was arguably the most accessible writer on economics topics in the world for the last half century, and Thomas Sowell is one of the world’s deepest thinkers on race, culture and economics. I consider his book Conflict of Visions one of the most profound and enlightening books on explaining the differences in political ideologies. While neither of these economic giants wrote from an explicitly Christian perspective, in God’s common grace we’ve been blessed by their contributions. So for this weekend, enjoy one of the videos and get caught up with two of my economics heroes.
