We are a two-party system. However we are seeing the fall of the two-party system once and for all. Due to the economic and social situtation that we are currently are in. We are not seeing it just fail, it is splintering if something doesnt change. I predict that when the republicans gain back control (They would have in 2012 except they ran a bad candidate.). The evidence is that their has been a decline in the percent of republicans and democrats and a rise in the numbers of independents. The Tea Party and Occupy movements could easily have become third party movements if they really wanted to. The Tea Party was so powerful it had more senators loose their seats in 1 election in over 50 years. It was the election of a lifetime. Republicans need to do this to fix the budget, if they dont the two-party system will fracture even further and a true third party might come to power, one that is in the middle a true independent party of America. The republicans must create a balanced budget amendment at the federal level. All or almost all states currently have one. If they have the votes, they could pass it in congress. It would be very unpopular for the democrats to vote aganist it.The second would be an audit on the federal budget every so years a minimum of every four years. The third and most obvious to actually balance the budget. This is harder than it sounds. We currently spend about 3 trillion dollars per year and take down 2 trillion dollars. The economy and the naitonal deficit are going to go hand in hand. The problem will continue for years and I dont think one administrator (8 years) will be able to solve the problem completely.

Actually, what would likely happen in that instance is the rise of a one party system. The Democrats would become super-dominate. Even when they have fractures (i.e. Obama vs, Clinton in 2008) they still manage to come together for the general election and unite their party. If a third party arises, it will do so at the expense of the GOP whose voters are far less pragmatic (at least at this point in time) than Democrats are.
