Since my last post was pretty gloomy for Republican-leaning voters, consider this comment from Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson, who continues to push a per employee tax on Chicago businesses, even after the city council’s finance committee soundly rejected it (from the WSJ):
Yet Mr. Johnson is doubling down. “The corporate tax is in this budget. It will stay in this budget,” he said. Asked in a press conference whether piling on more taxes would hurt the downtown economy, the Mayor blamed the vacancy rate on the lingering effects of Covid: “There is no correlation between taxation and the success, if you will, of corporations.” (Emphasis added)
Is it too taxing on the mayor to understand Econ 101?
The last I saw Mr. Johnson had an approval rating less than 10%. Unfortunately Republicans can’t rely on foolish Democrats in the congressional races, who like Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill, will portray themselves as centrists even while their policies will be far left. Nevertheless, it is the Republicans best hope, unless costs come down markedly and real income rises rapidly going into next fall.
