This year’s election results have not caused Democrats to reconsider their approach, and its not just Mr. Obama who is doubling down. Part of this is the result of the election; the vulnerable red state Democratic senators that lost the election were the more moderate members of their party. The election has resulted in an even more progressive Democratic Party. According to the NY Times, Sen Schumer is expected to call for the Democrats to explicitly embrace government in a speech to the National Press Club:
“Democrats must embrace government. It’s what we believe in; it’s what unites our party; and, most importantly, it’s the only thing that’s going to get the middle class going again,” Mr. Schumer will say, according to his prepared remarks…..We must convince the middle class that the only way out of their morass is by embracing a strong and effective government, not demeaning it or running from it.”
Bereans also embrace a strong and effective government, but we have grave reservations that a large government (beyond its biblical purposes) will be either strong or effective. Further, when we consider that government is filled with fallen people just like the private sector, we have concerns when increasing power is consolidated in an organization with the legitimate monopoly of violence. When Mr. Obama and Mr. Schumer basically thumb their nose at the electorate, this only increases our distrust of a large government.
Contrary to the Schumer message, Big Government is not the only way to get out of the “morass” we’re in, indeed, its strongly questionable that it is a way at all. For just a small retort, ask which states are doing relatively well since the financial crisis, and which states are doing poorly. I think you’ll find a generally consistent color (red vs. blue) for those doing well and those doing poorly. Pushing more government hasn’t been generally successful at the state level, and it hasn’t been successful at the national level. Maybe we should try something else….like freedom.
And oh by the way, have a blessed Thanksgiving!
