I’m actually both amused and tremendously surprised at the depth of coverage of Mr. Biden’s pardon of his son this weekend. I’m surprised because everybody had to know it was going to happen. Mr. Biden’s protestations to the contrary, that paragon of virtue was always almost certainly going to pardon his son. No one in their right mind should possibly have believed his denials of this. His entire political history is filled with lie after lie, which we and numerous others have covered. The right’s “I told you so” reaction is to be expected–and I’m joining it. I don’t think I actually said anything on the blog because it was such a certainty and therefore not interesting, but yes, I’ve told you that Mr. Biden’s integrity should always be questioned. And I’m not talking about the “hey, all politicians shade the truth” type of lies, nor the private moral failures that we all expect them to deny publically, nor am I talking about the hyperbole that is characteristic of our president-elect. I’m talking about the bald-faced lies in the service of Mr. Biden’s short term political calculus–ones he has done throughout his career. Beginning most famously with his 1988 plagiarism of Neil Kinnock’s life story during his aborted presidential run, to his grotesque re-writing of his first wife’s tragic car crash*, to his never talking to his son about his business dealings, to this one. He is not to be believed about anything that he perceives to be in his interest to lie about. So given this undeniable reality of his record, how can anyone be surprised?
But I’m amused at the response on the left. They are actually indignant at the pardon, in large part because they are certain it will embolden Mr. Trump to all sorts of mischief. Not that they have concern that a guy who used political corruption to make millions and then cheated on his taxes was given a free pass. Who cares about that? There is Mr. Trump to be outraged about! Indeed, in shameful justification of Mr. Biden’s pardon, some are claiming that he had to do it because of Mr. Trump’s vindictiveness and what he would do after the election. Think about that logic for a minute. Edit Update: But not all of them. At least if they’re no longer in power. Consider Congressman Dean Phillips great line on X:
Let’s just say the quiet part out loud, certain Americans are indeed above the law and influence is always for sale. It’s time for the exhausted majority to condemn and confront legalized corruption.
Yet some on the right are worried that the “Biden Crime Family” is getting away with it. Here is where Bereans get to relax. The Bidens aren’t getting away with anything. There is a sovereign judge of the universe who works out part of His judgment on this earth, but ultimately gets complete justice in eternity. Should the Biden family repent and turn to Christ, then they’ll “get away with it” in eternity. But they’ll spend eternity marveling at the glorious grace of a merciful God who forgave them, in the same way we will. Should they not repent, we can fully rest in God’s complete justice. No one truly gets away with it. But some of us get forgiven of it, and all of us can be forgiven, if we repent and believe in Christ.
One other note. Isn’t this a perfect reflection of our walk through Daniel? This is clearly the kingdoms of men serving their own glory and being hostile to the Kingdom of God. That those on the left are actually outraged at Mr. Biden’s behavior suggests they were putting their hope in the wrong kingdom. Kingdoms of men always fail us. Always. The Kingdom of God never will. Happy Tuesday!
* Where he claims she was hit by a drunk driver and the reality was she crossed the line and hit a truck. It’s a tragedy either way, but this makes him look more sympathetic–more the victim of outrageous behavior rather than suffering through a terrible accident. Which is precisely why he repeatedly has lied about this. Like many of his other lies, he probably has told it so much he believes it.
