Progressives are continuing their refusal to recognize reality, as protests continued yesterday in major cities. To be fair, both sides enjoy pointing out they hypocrisy of their opponent’s ideological views. Yet I can’t help but smile in sadness at the almost infantilization of our progressive youths today. It was just 8 days ago that we heard the remonstrations towards Mr. Trump and his supporters, that he and they commit to respecting the outcome of the election. But now that the shoe is on the other foot, there is “understanding” that their protesting voices must be heard. Of course there is no threat to democracy (which I agree with) with the current protests. But if Mr. Trump had lost and his supporters were protesting, what do you think the response of the far left would be?
One of the ways this refusal to recognize reality manifests, or perhaps to deal with the reality in an unusual way, is the dream of some progressives for California to secede (with perhaps Oregon and Washington–yes, you could call it COW country).
Shervin Pishevar, an early Uber investor and cofounder of Hyperloop, posted a series of tweetsTuesday night announcing his plans to fund “a legitimate campaign for California to become its own nation.” And no, he’s not joking. “Yes it’s serious,” Pishevar told CNNMoney in an e-mail. “It’s the most patriotic thing I can do. The country is [at] a serious crossroads.”
There is a recognition that secession is not just difficult, its highly impractical. I have a proposal for secessionists. If you are concerned that your country has been taken over, and you are worried what Washington will do, you are not alone. The other half of the voting block was similarly concerned quite a long time. So why don’t we all agree to disagree, agreeably. Rather than seceding, why not join conservatives to call for a limited centralized government? There is a minor principle called “Federalism” that you may not be aware of that could be helpful to your cause. This would allow you tremendous room for California to have almost everything you want, while affording the rest of the country–which thinks very differently from you as you’ve discovered–to do the same. California could have as many regulations and as much government services as you desire to fund and implement. But in this model, Ohio would not be doomed to follow in your footsteps.
Seriously, federalism is applied tolerance in the sphere of government.* The sooner we realize that we are very different people, and therefore should not be forced to go along with the desires of whoever has ephemeral political power, the better off we’ll be.
* With the important limitation that all Americans rights explicitly found in the Constitution are enforced equally.
