‘Je Suis Charlie’

In light of the murders of much of the staff of Charlie Hebdo, the magazine that published cartoons of Mohammed, and paid for it, an interesting movement has developed. ‘Je Suis Charlie‘ is growing into a popular hashtag, sign, and symbol, as people from around the world are unifying around the idea of free speech in the face of aggression.

Also, some news outlets, in their own sign of solidarity, decided to publish some of the cartoons themselves. Others did not. Here are some details at National Review Online.

USA Today ran an editorial by Anjem Choudary. He overtly blames France for the tragedy since Charlie Hebdo was allowed to publish without consequences. What happened next, according to Choudary, was simply Muslims restoring Mohammed’s honor. This is remarkable only for my complete lack of surprise. In USA Today‘s defense, the editors did insert a gallery of Hebdo’s controversial covers right in the middle of Choudary’s text.

Virginia Law Would Allow Widespread Discrimination Against Homosexuals

The Virginia General Assembly is considering a bill that would grant a religious exemption for any entity licensed by the state to turn away customers based on sexual orientation or homosexual behavior. This is a step farther than laws previously proposed that would allow businesses (like florists or photographers) not to engage in homosexual marriage ceremonies through their businesses. This would apply to any business with a license. I have a strong feeling we may write a bit more about this issue.

Obama to Propose Free Community College Tuition

Well, this is interesting. President Obama will soon encourage Congress to pass appropriations that would allow high school graduates to get two free years of education at community colleges. Quickly, just two points. Nothing is free. The real question is how much will it cost taxpayers. Also, the federal government’s intrusion in academia already has ballooned prices through subsidization of student loans. Of course, this has nearly zero chance of success and is likely designed to paint the GOP as anti-education or anti-youth.

Most Important News Story of the Day

Without a moment of second guessing, the most critical news is from Athens, GA, where God’s favorite college football team, the Georgia Bulldogs, announced their new offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer. I will say, candidly, anyone with a grasp of football history does not get all that excited about coaches with the name Schottenheimer, but we should not paint the son with the father’s limitations. Rise above your name, Mr. Coordinator, for we will need you to do so. Go Dawgs!
