The Bereans seem to agree that there will not be a strong or effective legislative response to the shooting. My concern is that the constant question is how gun rights can be further constrained. Why do we not take a closer look at how we use our local police forces? Would it be possible or helpful for the states to make requirements for officers to be on each school campus x amount of hours any given week? This would be much easier to pass than any new gun legislation, and it would provide a direct deterrent to school shootings. A police officer could be on a school campus at any given time, which would make a shooting much harder to plan.

  We already put armed men in schools. If someone wants to shoot people, apparently we are unable to deter that. How militarized do our schools need to get before our kids are safe?

I doubt there will be any changes. We changed nothing after Sandy Hook or Las Vegas. If those didn’t mobilize a response I’m at a loss as to what could. Anything that would be effective would be so politically divisive that there can’t be any meaningful progress unless the political and ideological landscape changes.

These arguments about how ‘it’s a personal problem’ and ‘people will find a way’ strike me as weirdly pessimistic, because they imply that Americans are somehow more violent and psychopathic than everyone else because we’re basically the only ones with this problem. It’s not like there aren’t depraved people in Germany who want to hurt people.

How do we improve mental health policy?

It’s a bit of a shame that Franklin is the shepherd of the Graham legacy at this point. He’s such a different man than his father, in a way that I think reflects poorly on how evangelicalism has changed since his father’s heyday. We don’t seem to have learned the danger of letting our principles be pulled into the orbit of politics.

Sorry if my post was disjointed. I type them up as I listen so that I have all of my thoughts there to refine when the video is over. Maybe I should abandon that in the future since (I’m guessing) it’s hard to respond to.

I no one responds to anything else, I’d still like to know what people think we should do to improve mental health policy. I hear this brought up every time people get killed, but no one seems to have a concrete idea of what that means.

I strongly agree with Professor Wheeler about the school shooting. If someone is going to shoot up a school they are going to find a gun to do it. Not allowing them to buy one themselves isn’t going to stop them. Instead we need to do what we can do to stop people from even having thoughts like that. Each person do their part by being kind to every person. Go sit by the kids who don’t have friends and report people who you are worried about.
